How to print a PDF as a booklet, step by step

Booklet lays out several pages on each sheet: as a fold-and-staple booklet with the folding order already worked out, or simply several pages side by side.

  1. Drop in the PDF to lay out

    Drag the file onto the drop area, or click to browse for it. The document’s page count appears right away.

  2. Choose the mode

    “Booklet” fixes two pages per side in the order required for folding — the layout is then fixed. “Multiple pages per sheet” lets you freely pick 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, or 16 pages per sheet.

  3. Set the sheet format and orientation, if the layout allows it

    For the 6-, 8-, 9-, or 16-page grids, a sheet format (A4, A3, Letter) and an orientation — portrait or landscape — are added, along with spacing between pages and an optional thin frame.

  4. Adjust the margin around each page

    A field in millimetres sets the margin of every cell; a margin too large for the cell triggers a message and blocks the generate button.

  5. Click “Generate sheets”

    In booklet mode, a hint box reminds you to print double-sided flipping on the short edge, then fold the stack in the middle so the pages follow in reading order.

In booklet mode, the page count is padded up to a multiple of four with blank cells when needed — that is expected, the layout requires it for correct folding.

Frequently asked questions

How do I print a PDF as a booklet, two pages per sheet?

In "Booklet" mode, VellumPDF always places two pages per side and reorders the booklet for folding in the middle (saddle-stitch binding) — that is the only layout this mode offers. To print more pages per sheet (4, 6, 8, 9 or 16), use "Multiple pages per sheet" mode, which places pages in the document’s own order, without reordering for booklet folding.

Does the booklet layout keep the reading order correct after folding?

Yes, the page order is calculated so that once the sheets are folded and assembled, reading stays chronological from the start to the end of the document.

Is creating a PDF booklet free and processed locally?

Yes, the layout is computed in your browser, without the document being sent to a server, free and unlimited.

Can I print 6, 8, 9 or 16 pages on a single sheet?

Yes, in addition to the classic two- or four-page layouts, the tool offers grids of 6, 8, 9 and 16 pages per sheet, with a choice of sheet format (A4, A3, Letter) and orientation. The 6- and 8-page grids automatically adapt to the chosen orientation.

What are the gutter and the frame around each page for?

The gutter adds an adjustable gap between the grid cells, on top of the outer margin — useful to leave room for binding or cutting. The optional thin frame traces the outline of each cell, as a cutting guide for a paper cutter or scissors.
