How to split a PDF, step by step

Split turns one PDF into several separate documents: by page ranges, one page at a time, in batches of N pages or by separating odd and even pages. The work stays on your device.

  1. Drop in the PDF to split

    Drag the file onto the drop area, or click to browse for it. The page count and file size appear right away.

  2. Choose the split mode

    “By page ranges” splits the document into the groups you type; “One page per PDF” creates one file per page; “Every N pages” cuts regular batches; “Odd / even pages” produces two files.

  3. Enter the ranges, if that mode is chosen

    Separate each future document with a comma, e.g. “1-3, 4-6, 7”. A message updates live to show how many documents will be created. You can also click a thumbnail’s scissors to split the document after that page: the field fills itself in. In “Every N pages” mode, enter the “Number of pages per document” instead.

  4. Click “Split PDF”

    A single group downloads one PDF directly; two or more groups are delivered in a ZIP archive, one file per group.

Inside the ZIP archive, files are named “partie-1.pdf”, “partie-2.pdf”, and so on, in the order of the groups you typed — not after the original page numbers.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a PDF into several files by page ranges?

Specify the ranges you want, for example pages 1 to 3 in one file and 4 to 10 in another: VellumPDF produces a clean, downloadable PDF for each range.

Can I create more than two documents from a single PDF?

Yes, there is no limit to the number of ranges you define: a long report can be split into as many chapters as needed in a single pass.

Is splitting a PDF free and does it upload the file anywhere?

It is free, and no. The split is computed in your browser, without the document being transferred to a server, with no size limit and no account.

Do you get several files or one archive?

It depends on how many documents are produced. A single one downloads directly as a PDF; several are delivered in an archive, one file per document. In “By page ranges” mode, each comma you type therefore creates a separate document.

Are the source document’s metadata kept?

No. Each document produced is rebuilt from scratch, and only the selected pages are copied into it. The title, author and other fields of the source file are not carried over — fill them in afterwards if the document is to be archived.

What happens if two ranges overlap?

Nothing prevents it: the shared pages are duplicated and appear in both documents produced. It is not flagged as an error, because it is sometimes intended — a chapter you want both on its own and inside a set.

Can a PDF be split every two pages, or into odd and even pages?

Yes. “Every N pages” cuts the document into regular batches, according to the “Number of pages per document” (2 by default); the last batch may be shorter. “Odd / even pages” produces two files, one with the odd pages and one with the even pages, which helps with double-sided printing on a printer that cannot do it by itself.
