Text recognition (OCR)

Vellum turns a scanned document into reusable text and produces a searchable PDF that keeps the original layout. The optical character recognition engine runs in the browser and its files are hosted on our own domain: no third-party artificial intelligence service is called, and the document never leaves your device.

Does Vellum’s OCR accept both PDFs and photos?

Yes, you can upload a scanned PDF or a JPG or PNG image directly. Either way, the tool produces a searchable PDF whose text can be selected and copied.

What languages does the text recognition support?

You choose the document’s language before running recognition, from French, German, Italian and English. Selecting the right language noticeably improves how reliable the result is.

Is my scanned document sent to an online artificial intelligence service?

No, the recognition engine runs in your browser, with its files hosted on Vellum’s own domain. No third-party service is called, and the document never leaves your device.
