How to apply Bates numbering to a PDF, step by step
Bates numbering stamps every page of a batch of exhibits with a continuous number, running unbroken from one file to the next — the standard practice for document production.
Drop your exhibits (PDF)
Drag one or several PDF files onto the drop area, or add more afterwards with “Add more PDFs”.
Arrange them in filing order
The arrows move each exhibit up or down the list: this order, not the file names, sets the sequence of numbers.
Set the prefix, starting number and digit count
An example under the fields — such as “ABC-000001” — updates with every change, so you see exactly what will be stamped.
Choose the stamp’s position and size
Bottom right, bottom center, bottom left or top center; the text size is set separately.
Check the numbering preview
For each file, the first and last number it will receive are shown before you confirm.
Click “Apply Bates numbering”
A single file downloads directly; several exhibits numbered together are delivered in a ZIP archive, each under its original name.
A password-protected PDF is refused: unlock it first. The original files are never changed — only a numbered copy is produced.
Frequently asked questions
How do you apply continuous Bates numbering across multiple PDFs?
Arrange your exhibits in the order you want, set the prefix, the counter’s fixed digit count and an optional suffix, then run the stamp: the counter continues without interruption from one file to the next, the way document production works in a law firm.
Can I check the numbers before confirming the stamp on all exhibits?
Yes, a preview shows the first and last number of each file before you confirm, so you can catch an ordering or format mistake before final processing.
Do your exhibits, sometimes privileged, pass through a server?
No, numbering is computed directly in your browser: your documents are never sent to a server, and the tool is free to use.
In what order are the exhibits numbered?
In the order of the list, which you rearrange before stamping: each item can be moved up or down. The numbering then runs unbroken from one file to the next, like a single pagination of the whole file. It is the list order that counts, not the file names.
How do I get numbers like ABC-000123?
Three settings are enough: the prefix, which identifies the batch; the starting number; and the number of digits, which pads with leading zeros. An example updates under the fields as you type, so you see exactly what will be stamped before you start.
What do you get back when you drop several PDFs?
A ZIP archive with one numbered file per original exhibit, each under its original name. Your source files are left untouched. A password-protected PDF is refused: it has to be unlocked first.
