How to remove blank pages from a PDF, step by step

Detection runs on its own as soon as the file is dropped; it is then up to you to confirm or correct what it proposes.

  1. Drop in the PDF

Analysis starts automatically, page by page, with a progress bar you can cancel.

  2. Look over the pages proposed

Pages judged blank at the current sensitivity are ticked by default for removal.

  3. Adjust the sensitivity if needed

The slider recalculates the proposal instantly, without re-running the page analysis.

  4. Correct the checkboxes by hand

Every thumbnail stays individually tickable or untickable, regardless of the automatic verdict.

  5. Click “Remove N page(s)”

The button refuses to empty the document entirely: at least one page must remain.

A near-empty page carrying a letterhead, a stamp or a page number may not be proposed: lower the sensitivity to include it, or simply tick it by hand.

Frequently asked questions

How does VellumPDF recognise a blank page?

Each page is rendered small and in grayscale, then VellumPDF counts the share of pixels clearly darker than the paper. The paper tone is estimated page by page, so a scan with a grey background is not counted as fully inked. A band along each edge is ignored, because a sheet feeder almost always leaves a shadow or a dark rim that would make an empty sheet look like a printed page.

Will a page carrying only a letterhead or a page number be removed?

Not at the default setting: it treats a page as blank below 0.15 % of inked surface, which absorbs dust and scanner noise but not a line of text. If on the contrary you want to discard pages carrying a single stray mention, raise the sensitivity slider and check the thumbnails, which show the measured ink for every page.

Do the pages that are kept lose any quality?

No. VellumPDF copies the kept pages into the new document exactly as they are: they are not rasterised, recompressed or re-encoded. Text stays selectable, images keep their resolution, and the file gets smaller by precisely what the removed pages weighed.

Are my documents sent anywhere to be analysed?

No. Both the analysis and the export are computed by your browser: no file is uploaded, nothing is kept, and the tool is free. That is what makes it usable on client files or medical records without any special clearance.
