How to manage a PDF’s attachments, step by step
This tool lists, extracts, adds and removes the files embedded in a PDF — a mechanism separate from images or visible text on the pages.
Drop your PDF
Drag the file in, or click to browse for it. The list of attachments already present appears right away.
Extract one attachment, or all of them at once
Each listed attachment carries its own download button; “Extract all N files (ZIP)” grabs them all as one archive.
Mark the ones to remove
The remove button marks an attachment in red; it stays reversible until you save, via the undo button.
Add new files
Drop them into the dedicated area: any file type is accepted, and the MIME type is inferred automatically.
Click “Save changes”
VellumPDF applies the additions and removals, then offers the modified PDF for download.
The removal only becomes final once the modified file is downloaded: as long as you haven’t saved, a marked removal can be undone with one click.
Frequently asked questions
What kinds of files can a PDF carry as an attachment?
Any kind — a PDF can embed an e-invoice XML file, a spreadsheet, an image, or another PDF. This mechanism is separate from images or visible text on the pages: an attachment is downloaded, not displayed.
How do I extract an attachment without a regular PDF reader?
Once the file is dropped, each listed attachment offers a button to extract it individually, or a single button to grab them all at once as a ZIP archive — handy when a case file carries several.
Can I add my own files to an existing PDF?
Yes, by dropping them into the dedicated area: they’re added to the existing attachments once the changes are saved. The MIME type is inferred automatically from the file.
Is removing an attachment reversible?
Before saving, yes: a marked removal can be undone with one click. Once the modified file is downloaded, though, the removal is final in that new file — keep the original if you’re not sure.
