How to split PDF pages in half, step by step

A book scanned open holds two pages on one; VellumPDF separates them without recomputing any image.

  1. Drop the scanned PDF

    Drag the file onto the drop area, or click to choose it. Its size and page count appear.

  2. Choose the direction of the cut

    “Left | right” separates the two pages of an open book; “Top / bottom” separates a sheet folded across.

  3. Set the order and the pages concerned

    “Right then left” is for documents read from right to left. The “Only cut double pages” box, ticked by default, leaves whole the pages that are not shaped like a double page, such as a cover scanned on its own.

  4. Click “Cut the pages”

    The summary shows how many pages were cut and the page count before and after. The text stays selectable.

Each half is the original page with only part of it shown: no quality is lost, and a rotated page is cut according to what you see on screen.

Frequently asked questions

Does quality drop when a page is split in half?

No. No image is recomputed: each half is the original page with only part of it visible. The text of a scan that went through OCR stays selectable, and the file barely grows.

How do I keep the cover whole?

Leave “Only cut double pages” ticked: with the left/right cut, only landscape pages are cut, and a cover scanned on its own, in portrait, stays whole.

What about a manga or a document in Arabic?

Choose “Right then left”: the right half of each double page then comes first, in the document’s reading order.
