How to resize a PDF, step by step

Resize brings every page to the same size, standard or made to measure, or scales them, keeping or forcing their orientation.

  1. Drop in the PDF to resize

Drag the file into the drop zone, or click to browse. VellumPDF detects the size of the first page: a standard size from A0 to A6, Letter, Legal, or a custom size in millimetres.

  2. Choose the mode

“Target format” offers a list of standard formats; “Free scale” accepts a percentage between 10% and 400% of the original size.

  3. Pick the format or the scale

The list runs from A0 to A6 and includes Letter and Legal; “Custom” opens the “Width (mm)” and “Height (mm)” fields. The “Orientation” setting keeps each page’s direction (“Same as original”) or forces “Portrait” or “Landscape” on all of them.

  4. Click “Resize”

VellumPDF scales every page’s content without distorting or cropping it, and centers it on the new format. The result shows the starting size and the final one.

The “detected” format shown only looks at the first page: if pages have different sizes, each one is still resized according to its own original format.

Frequently asked questions

How do I bring every page of a PDF to the same format?

Pick a standard size from A0 to A6, Letter or Legal, a “Custom” size in millimetres, or a percentage scale: VellumPDF scales every page and centres the content so it stays readable.

Does resizing work on a document with mismatched page sizes?

Yes, that is its main use: bringing a document made of differently sized pages to one consistent format before printing.

Is resizing a PDF free, with no file upload?

Yes, the computation happens in your browser, with no transfer to a server and no size limit.

Is content that does not fit cropped or distorted?

Neither. The content is scaled in the same proportions so it fits entirely within the target page, then centred with equal margins. Nothing is stretched, nothing is trimmed.

Can I force portrait or landscape?

Yes. The “Orientation” setting is “Same as original” by default: each page keeps its own direction. “Portrait” or “Landscape” forces the same direction on every page; the content is not rotated but scaled to fit the page, even if that leaves wider margins.

Does free scaling accept a size in millimetres?

No, the free scale remains a percentage of the original size. For an exact size, switch to “Target format” and choose “Custom”: the “Width (mm)” and “Height (mm)” fields appear. As long as the orientation stays “Same as original”, these dimensions are applied as typed.
