How to overlay two PDFs, step by step

A second PDF — letterhead, a frame, or a stamp — is layered onto every page of a document, directly in your browser.

  1. Drop in the base document and the layer

Two separate drop areas each take one file; each one’s page count appears once it is loaded.

  2. Choose the position

“On top” or “Underneath”; a note under the setting suggests which suits letterhead or a stamp. The layer is always scaled to fit the page and centered.

  3. Choose the layer mode, if needed

When the layer has more than one page, a setting appears: “Repeat the first page” or “Page by page”.

  4. Click “Overlay”

The overlay is applied at once to every page of the base document.

If either file is password-protected, the error message always names the base document, even when the layer is actually the one at fault.

Frequently asked questions

How do you overlay a letterhead onto every page of a PDF?

Drop in the main document and the PDF containing the letterhead or background, choose whether it goes above or below each page, and confirm: the overlay is applied to every page of the main document in one pass.

Can I use a decorative background instead of a letterhead?

Yes, the second PDF can be any template: a page background, a decorative frame or pre-printed letterhead — the tool reproduces the same visual effect on every page.

Are both files uploaded to a server, and does the tool cost anything?

No, both PDFs are processed entirely in your browser, with nothing sent to a server, and the tool is free.

Should the layer go above or below?

Below for a letterhead: the document’s text stays readable over the background. Above for a frame, a stamp or a “copy” mark: the element has to stay visible even where it covers text. It is the only setting that really changes the result, and it is one click.

What happens if the layer has fewer pages than the document?

It depends on the mode. With “repeat the first page”, the same layer page is applied throughout, whatever the document’s page count — the normal case for a letterhead. With “page by page”, the layer follows page for page, and the document’s pages beyond the layer stay unchanged.

Can I use a decorative background rather than a letterhead?

Yes, any PDF works as a layer: a coloured background, a graphic watermark, a frame, a print template. The only thing that matters is the page size, because the layer is applied onto the document page as it is.
