How to remove a watermark from a PDF, step by step
This tool detects watermarks laid over a document — stamps, layers, repeated blocks — and excises them from the content stream, page by page.
Drop the PDF in question
Drag the file in, or click to browse for it. The analysis starts right away, looking for suspicious items.
Uncheck anything that should stay
Each detected item is checked by default, with its type and the pages it appears on; a header or logo repeated on every page looks a lot like a watermark — uncheck it if it should be kept.
Check the before/after preview
The two thumbnails show the first page touched by the selection, as it is and as it will be; “Refresh the preview” recalculates after every change to the selection.
Click “Remove the checked items”
VellumPDF rebuilds the document without the selected items and offers it for download.
A watermark merged into the image of a scanned page is no longer a separable item: no local tool can remove it without degrading the rest of the page. And removing the watermark from a document you don’t hold the rights to may infringe copyright, regardless of whether it’s technically possible.
Frequently asked questions
Can this tool remove any watermark from a PDF?
It removes watermarks laid over the document — stamp annotations, layers named “Draft” or “Watermark”, drawing blocks repeated identically on almost every page — by excising them from the content stream without touching the rest. A watermark merged into the page image of a scanned document, though, is no longer a separable element: this tool won’t remove it.
Am I allowed to remove a watermark from a PDF with this tool?
Only if you hold the rights to the document. Removing an ownership mark, a third party’s stamp or a licensing watermark without authorization can amount to a copyright or contract violation, regardless of whether it’s technically possible.
Is the file uploaded to a server for watermark analysis?
No, detection and removal are computed locally in your browser, with no upload of the PDF, and the tool is free to use.
