How to convert an ODT file to PDF, step by step

A LibreOffice or OpenOffice document becomes a PDF without installing software: the file is read and rebuilt in your browser.

  1. Drop your OpenDocument files

    Drag one or more .odt, .ods or .odp files into the drop area, or click to choose them. Their templates (.ott, .ots, .otp) are accepted too.

  2. Keep or drop the bookmarks

    The “Bookmarks from headings” box, ticked by default, turns the document’s headings into the PDF’s clickable outline.

  3. Click “Convert to PDF”

    Each file becomes a PDF with real, selectable and searchable text; several files are bundled into a ZIP archive.

  4. Read the list of adjustments

    Below the download button, a list shows what was adjusted: footnotes gathered at the end, fonts replaced, charts or shapes not carried over.

The layout is rebuilt, not copied pixel for pixel: a letter, a report or a spreadsheet stay faithful, an elaborate design shifts. The document’s fonts are replaced with Helvetica, Times or Courier depending on their family.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to install LibreOffice to convert ODT to PDF?

No. VellumPDF reads the OpenDocument file itself and lays out the PDF in the browser: no software is installed and the document is not sent anywhere.

Are headers, footers and page numbers carried over?

Yes. The page style’s header and footer appear on every page, with the page number and page count recalculated for the PDF. Footnotes are gathered at the end of the document.

What about an .ods spreadsheet or an .odp presentation?

Each non-empty sheet starts on a new page, in landscape if it is wide; formulas are replaced by their last result. A presentation gives one page per slide, with its text and images; embedded charts and tables are not carried over.
