How to unlock a PDF, step by step
The protection on a PDF whose password you know, or one that requires none to be read, is removed directly in your browser.
Drop in the PDF
A badge shows whether encryption is detected; VellumPDF immediately tries to unlock it with no password.
Enter the password if asked
If the document requires its opening password, a dedicated field appears; “Incorrect password” is shown on a mistake.
Click “Unlock”
The button stays disabled until a password has been typed.
Download the resulting file
The final message states whether a real password was removed, or only restrictions (printing, copying, editing) limited the file with no opening password.
There is no limit on password attempts: the form reappears as many times as needed after an incorrect password, with no temporary lockout.
Frequently asked questions
Can VellumPDF recover a forgotten PDF password?
No, VellumPDF is not a password-cracking tool. It removes the protection from a PDF whose password you already know, or to which you are legitimately entitled. Without that password, no operation is possible.
How do I unlock a password-protected PDF?
Drop in the file: if an opening password is required, enter it, then download the version without protection. If the PDF had no opening password but only restrictions on printing, copying or editing, those are removed automatically. The whole process runs in your browser, in a few seconds.
Are my files sent to a server to be unlocked?
No, processing happens locally on your device, without the document being transmitted to a server. VellumPDF is free and keeps no copy of your files.
What is the difference between removing a known protection and breaking an encryption?
VellumPDF removes a protection whose password you already know, or one that only required an owner password with no opening password — the latter case needs no input at all. It never tries to guess or break an encryption you don’t hold the key to: without the correct opening password, the tool returns “incorrect password” and stops there.
How does VellumPDF know a file is encrypted before you even click?
A local check looks for the string “/Encrypt” near the end of the file, where a PDF’s encryption dictionary is usually located, to display an indicative badge. That badge only guides the interface: it is the actual result of the unlock attempt, not this detection, that decides whether you are asked for a password.
Do I need to enter a password if the PDF only has printing or copying restrictions?
No. VellumPDF first tries to unlock the file with no password as soon as it is uploaded; if that succeeds — the case of a PDF locked only by restrictions, with no opening password — they are removed immediately and no field appears. The password field only shows up when an opening password is genuinely required.
